The “Modern Data Stack”

Is it just another buzzword? Or does this one actually have some substance?

A flexible set of technologies that help businesses store, manage and learn from their data.

To put it simply, the two main features of the Modern Data Stack are:

  1. A paradigm shift from Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) to Extract, Load, Transform (ELT).
  2. Moving from all-in-one solutions to custom-built end-to-end solutions.

So, why has the concept of a Modern Data Stack become so appealing?

1) Times have changed

Technology has evolved, but ETL methods that deliver our analytics have remained the same since the ’80s. Until now, we’ve essentially just replaced individual components within an existing process with newer, shinier versions that aim to make those processes more efficient.

It works, but is it really still the best process to be optimised?

2) Flexible pricing

We used to have to pay for technology and infrastructure by buying actual hardware. This really limited our choices. Smaller businesses simply couldn’t afford the state-of-the-art solutions and so were forced into specific vendors and tools.
