# 1 — Why

I always wanted to write.

I’m a reader, going way back. As a kid, I’m told as early as three, my grandparents showed me off to friends while I read the newspaper. Later, I tore through Hardy Boys, and discovered Stephen King. I’ve read textbooks for classes I never took. I’ve cried through accounts of the horrors of war. One sticks to me like used flypaper in my hair. I’ve felt anxiety, fear, love, joy, pride, power, from words on pages.

I have cards that say Writer, but only my best friend has one.

I’m ready to hand them out.
