Content Marketing Mistakes
1. Skipping the Planning Phase
I have seen many people getting excited about starting a new blog, even I get excited at the time. With this excitement we tend to skip the planning phase which is foremost important.
Unfortunately, you can’t just start a new blog without the plan and expect some good results. To make your content marketing strategy useful, you need to prepare it well before taking any actions.
Now you must be wondering what I should do to plan a strategy. For starter’s it is not a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants initiative, you need to go deep and research around these things and plan:
- What type of audience you are going to target
- Which Geographical Area you want to focus
- What are their interests, age group, gender, etc.?
- Understanding real needs of your target audience
- Which Tools will be helpful for your campaign
For Content Marketing Audience Segmentation is a “KING” it will act a gold mine if you understand and implement the rule. In simple terms decide your target audience.
For Example in my case, i only want to target Entrepreneurs who run company with approx ten employees or Marketing and Sales Head those are working in companies who carries more than 100 employees.
2. Focusing on Quantity over Quality
The more piece of content you produce, the more results you achieve. Is it True? No!
I have seen a lot of content campaigns people do and not all of them achieve what they want. The main reason behind that they are not able to sustain the visitors for long as they don’t pass value. It happens when you and your team keeps on producing the content like a machine and overlook quality.
You must be thinking what make the quality content? Hey, wait don’t think adding videos, images or graphics these are also important. Here the quality means: You produce a unique content from real learnings with example and How to guides, in
Here the quality means: You create an exclusive content from real scholarships with example and How to guides, in a nutshell, you have to solve the real problem of your readers. Here is a list of @forbes The Essential Elements of High-Quality Content by @JaysonDemers
Why focus on Quality and What are benefits? There are many reasons as It builds trust, increases your engagement, and drives thought leadership.
Quality Content also benefits you to improve Search Engine Rankings because Google thinks the quality is vital. So if Google likes your website, it will send more traffic than any other source.
Now you know what you need to do to produce quality content for reader here are some checklist to match the content quality for Google:
- The content on the page should be unique
- Don’t over stuff the keywords into page
- Make your website navigation easy for users
- Each article should support the single subject
- Make sure the content is enough to carry subject details
- Page having videos, images, etc. will be helpful
3. Using limited types of content
Yes its good to stick to one thing at a time, list again “at a time” Once you master the one it even more right to move to next.
I have seen many people they stick to written content, and they don’t try to another one because they think they are good at that. In a nutshell, it’s good to master one thing before you tackle another, you shouldn’t stick to just one forever.
There are many types of content you can produce like Infographics, Podcast, slide decks, videos, etc. if you blog post are missing the variants believe me you losing the enormous potential.
Capitalizing on different types of content will also allow you to repurpose your content and get more mileage out of each and every post.
Here is some cake for you to think about content types:
- How to Guides
- Online Courses
- Slide Decks
- Case Studies
- Real Stories
4. Missing Audience Segmentation:
Audience segmentation is the process of identifying the different types and characteristics of a target market based on such criterion as product usage, demographics, communications behavior, media use and even what place in a sales funnel or pitch is the recipient of the message.
It’s one of the most common errors marketers do that they publish the content for a general audience. If you don’t know for whom you are writing content, answer yourself — How you will be able to solve their real problems.
Segmenting your audience will narrow down the funnel, and you will quickly increase your content relevance.
Instead of getting attracted to million of people, it’s better to be loved by thousands so that they can buy from you.
5. Writing on many Topics
We all get tempted to write about everything related to our industry, especially when you are just starting out.
It’s better to be master of one niche than a jack of all and become known as an expert in that area.
Narrowing down your niche will give you a competitive advantage and gives your momentum early on as it helps you stick to the mind of your followers.
Specialist is easier to remember compared to Generalist!
You can always cater the traction later on once you have built some name and existence in one niche.
For Example, I concentrate on writing about Sales + Marketing = SaMarketing because they work hand to hand. I can also write about many other things. So thefocus is a must! My Topics are limited to my Domain Knowledge.
6. Ignoring SEO
The SEO is one where people gets pissed off because they think it’s too technical and complicated. But in reality, Search Engine Optimization is not that hard.
Ya, it’s not difficult, but it’s important because doing this you make search engines happy. Here you too need to figure out your target keyword which you can only do if you know your target audience.
I use SEMrush and SEO tool to search keywords and their competition. This tool will allow you to research your competitors and your prospects to determine what keywords you want your content to rank.
Use this excellent SEO Plugin Yoast to optimize your blog post for the researched keyword.
In this post, i have tried to cook the mistakes we do in content marketing. Currently, I have aggregated 6, and I will keep on adding the mistakes I do and make you learn the fun way which I will learn the hard way.
