But most of the time, introverts love an evening out. The true introvert is as comfortable alone in a busy restaurant or bar as they are anywhere else. And, if you are lucky, on any given evening, a polite nameless person will step out of the crowd, hand you a menu, and slip away.

I am an introvert, but I don’t relate to this. I love meeting new people and having random conversations, but it has to be on my terms. When I go to dinner by myself, I am always happy to talk to a couple sitting nearby, a man sitting by himself, the bartender, the waiter or the maitre’d. I’m always interested in a good conversation. What I do not enjoy is small talk. Sometimes I can have a wonderful evening with strangers at a sushi bar, where everyone gets interested in looking at all the different dishes the chef is preparing, and that might even set off a fun conversation among a group of customers.

After dinner, I am very happy to go home to be by myself and read, write, watch the news or a movie. I need more alone time than most, but when I go out, I like to engage. And when I am home, I find that even the phone ringing is distracting and an irritation.
