I think the important part about claps is this, from Katie Zhu’s post that Ev linked:

“Our system will evaluate your claps on an individual basis, assessing your evaluation of a story relative to the number of claps you typically send.”

So, claps are on your scale — unique to each person. If I want to give one clap all the time and two claps if it’s awesome, I’m indicating to Medium what they hoped I would — I like that one better than other stuff. My scale, so far, seems to end up as 0…5:

  • 0 = nope
  • 1 = agree/nice/recommend
  • 2 = pretty good
  • 3,4 = fat-fingered 2’s and 5‘s
  • 5 = really good, people should read this
