I use Academia a lot — much more so than my personal site — as a place to share my research and teaching documents. I’m a big believer in open access, and I’m glad to have a study (albeit one produced by an interested party) showing the benefits of open-access scholarship. That said, I find the use of Mechanical Turk for data cleaning to be troubling. Of course Academia is far from alone in using microtasking services, but to me it seems particularly uncomfortable — though probably indicative of techified politics — to use exploitative digital piecework on a study touting the benefits of “liberated” scholarship.
