Compare what they are doing to the Royal Navy of the 18 and 19 century sailing around finding some uninhabited rocks and if it has a good anchorage plant a flag and leave some supplies and Marines. The Empire is gone but Britain is left with a series of tiny outposts around the world and after 1940 having to hand over access to many of these rocks to the new Empire of the US. Ascension Island is in a useful position for a radar site, satellite monitoring site etc. Diego Garcia is now an enormous US base and the shame there is the island was genuinely inhabited and as recently as the 1970's the inhabitants were forced out of their homes. How has international court cases and shaming worked for them against the UK and US?
