Hey Sara, you shouldn’t care too much about what others think of your accent as you don’t want to become their prisoner. Some interesting facts:
1. The largest English-speaking nation on the planet India (and if you can go back to pre-1947, ie the splitting of British India to India and Pakistan then it’s an even larger figure).
2. The most spoken language in the world is Chinese, followed by Spanish, then English.
3. Most of us Sino-Asians speak at least 3 languages/dialects.
4. China, India and ASEAN combined has a population of 4 billion, the world population is only 7 billion, America’s population is only 300 million, England 55 million, Canada 30 million, Australia 25 million and NZ is too small to be included in this conversion.
5. A single Chinese city like Chongqing has a population of 35 million, that’s larger than the entire Canada or Australia.
As such, how does the English language/accent fit into this really big picture, ie besides the fact that you and I speak it, together with several other languages, dialects, and accents as well!
