I think your wording sounds slightly unfair. Math is a structural science, and similar to natural sciences, it will observe and try to create concepts around structure.

The solution to questions that we cannot answer, such as what is 1–2 if I only know natural numbers, or what is sqrt(2) or sqrt(-1) if I only rational or real numbers, require us mathematicians to develop new concepts to explain these structures.
