I finished the German course on Duolingo and here is what I learned.

If readers follow me on twitter, you will know that I have started a Duolingo journey and that is to finish every single Duolingo tree and to reach level 5 on every lesson. The reason why I did this was because I wanted to sample different languages and also because I like silly challenges. After every language I plan to write a review and rank it. I want to be clear, and say that this is for ENGLISH LEARNERS only.

How big is German?

The first language that I studied on Duolingo was German. German is one of the most popular foreign languages to learn in the world. It’s currently ranked as the third most studied language by English users on Duolingo at 8.62 million. It’s the official language in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, South Tyrol, German speaking community of Belgium, and Luxembourg. It’s also an official language of the European Union. It has close to 100 million native speakers, and around 10–15 million L2 speakers. German is a level II on the State Department FSI scale. It has four grammatical cases, and three gender inflections. German word order is typically Subject-Verb-Object, however the verb always comes in the second position.
