I don’t know if anyone has worked on this yet but I took the spreadsheet that Kirk Pettinga produced and came up with a very rough map. It took about 2–3 hours just to get the data to this point. More work still needs to be done to the data. This map shows the movements of all of the ships whose names start with the letter D on June 28, 2014. I was just trying to find ways to break the data down into smaller groups.

I suspect some of these ships wandered in circles, like the Dattilo CP 940, because the data is in perfect order by time yet the ship didn’t really go anywhere — perhaps it was drifting.

If this data could be overlaid onto satellite or aerial photography, it would be even more useful. The north arrow is incorrect on this map but I haven’t figured out how to delete an image from a Medium page.
