You are _____.
Think about it. But don’t think about it too hard.
You are what you think you are.
Now we all hear the typical “You are what you eat.” At the end of the day does it really matter whether or not I am a cow, tomato, or piece of chocolate birthday cake? I guess that is my next topic.
But in all reality, positive and negative self talk can be detrimental to your happiness, confidence, and success in life. What we think we are may really be what we are.
If you think you’re good at math, you probably are. If you think your body looks good at the gym, well it probably does. If you think you are rocking your new job, congrats… you probably are. If you think you are having a bad hair day, sorry but you probably are.
Now your mind might be drifting to a few of the many negative self-talks you give yourself. You might relate to a few of the following phrases:
- I am fat.
- I am lonely.
- I am bored.
- I am failing.
Those are true and that may be a hard bite to swallow. So, this is where the valuable lesson comes in that I personally learned from a night of self-pity, ice cream, and my apple music on shuffle.
If by chance you haven’t heard of the greatest band ever, Foster the People, tune in to their song- Are You What You Want To Be?
“These things ask the biggest question to me, are you what you want to be?” -FTP
This is such a valuable question. We honestly can be anything. If we find ourself unhappy with the way we fill in the blank “I am _____,” then we need to change it.
HOW OVERWHELMING. Luckily, that song only lasted 4 minutes and 31 seconds until my apple music surprised me with another Foster The People classic: Waste.
“And every day that you want to waste, that you want to waste, you can
And every day that you want to wake up, that you want to wake, you can
And every day that you want to change, that you want to change, yeah” -FTP
This is the power. In fact, its called willpower.
Willpower: Energetic determination.
I personally do not want to ever be a girl spending a night soaking in self-pity, crying over a tub of Ben & Jerry’s. But there I found myself. And at some point in life, so will you. You will find yourself un-happy with your life.
So the next time you are unhappy with the way you fill in that blank, “ I am ____.” You need to ‘Ask Yourself’
And you say that dreamers always get what they desire
Well I’ve found, that the more I want the less I’ve got
Is this the life you’ve been waiting for
Or are you hoping that you’ll be where you want with a little more?
Well ask yourself, Is this the life you’ve been waiting for? -FTP.
