Inhuman: A Half-Life 2 Story

Years after the Borealis Incident, the Combine find themselves stranded on Earth, forced to integrate with what remains of society. The resistance’s war for freedom slows to a crawl as humanity struggles to find a hero to replace Gordon Freeman. Running low on options, they resort to creating one of their own.

Inhuman is a combat-focused mod in the Half-Life universe taking heavy inspiration from tactical action classics like F.E.A.R. With a combination of completely redesigned enemy behavior, weapon balance, and levels with a focus on a unique and dark look, Inhuman seeks to stand out as a brand new shooter experience.

Along with a fresh approach to Half-Life’s gameplay loop, Inhuman features a far darker tone. Set after the events of a vague and hypothetical Half-Life 2: Episode 3, the player takes the role of an unnamed cyborg, programmed by the resistance to wreak havoc on the Combine for as long as possible before expiring. Your allies are dead, and everything in your way wants you killed. With the combination of a machine’s strategic calculation and impossible reflexes, you have a chance to fulfill your purpose. The Combine are more coordinated now, but they aren’t expecting an enemy they can’t intimidate.

Revamped Tactical Combat

Intense firefights with intelligent squad based enemies is the core focus of Inhuman’s gameplay loop. You’ll face Combine variants returning from Half-Life Alyx along with both new and old foes from the Half-Life series who will stop at nothing to bring you down.

Enemies in Inhuman put a much larger emphasis on staying near a safe cover position, suppress their enemies when they’ve lost sight of them, and are very keen to flush you out with grenades. Soldiers are also much more reactive, investigating suspicious sounds and ducking for cover when in danger. To give the player a fair shot in fighting them, enemies no longer track you when they cannot see you, allowing you to get the drop on them by using side routes and sneaky tactics.

To add more dramatic impact to the action, nearly every facet of Half-Life 2’s presentation have been overhauled. We’ve updated various impact effects, weapon animations, and HUD elements to bring a new satisfying weight to gunplay. Some of this is still WIP but we are very happy with progress so far.

A Brutal and Hostile World

Inhuman features a unique and dark setting in the new world of Half — Life. The Resistance is failing and the Combine are slowly being forced to integrate with what remains of human civilization. As you move through the world you will explore Combine controlled factories and the long abandoned sewers of the old city they have haphazardly built over.

Going Forward

Inhuman has been a relatively low profile project for the better part of 5 years now and it feels great to be able to confidently show it in the state it’s in now. While I can’t give any guaranteed release schedule, I’m certain that the game will be shipped, preferably within a year. While level progress is going steady, we could always use more help, especially with models and textures to help bring the world to life.
