And even if you do sign up with a publisher there is no guarantees that they are going to do much beyond producing a book.
In the past self publishing was the norm rather then the exception.

In fact, the production of a book isn’t even guaranteed by most trad pub contracts :( Most have clauses which allow them to reneg BUT still hold the author to the non-compete clauses in the contract! Insanity.
