Today’s mini-dialogue:

- Can you manage another sandwich? (= Are you able to eat another sandwich?)
- You bet! (=Sure)

What you need to remember:

  1. We’ve already discussed MANAGE in Post 7.
Today’s phrase is short for 𝘊𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘸𝘪𝘤𝘩? MANAGE here means ‘be able to’.

More examples:

- Catherine manages on five hours of sleep a night. (=She is able to function only sleeping 5 hours a night)
- I managed to finish on time. (=I was able…)
- I can’t manage all this work on my own. (=I won’t be able to do all this work alone)
- Don’t worry about us — we’ll manage. (=we will be ok)
- Can you manage dinner on Saturday? (=Can you come to dinner on Saturday?)

2. Don’t forget that if you want to say ‘one more’, you use ANOTHER, not OTHER.

ANOTHER is used before nouns in singular form only, not plural. I often hear ANOTHER PEOPLE and it’s a mistake! You should say OTHER PEOPLE or THE OTHER PEOPLE instead (depending on the context).

If you want to understand how to use OTHER, THE OTHER and ANOTHER correctly, watch my lesson on Youtube.

3. We saw BET in the last lesson. It usually means ‘to put money on some result’. But you can also see BET in two conversational expressions you need to remember.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗲𝘁 means ‘Certainly’
It’s a short form of 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘣𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦.

- Will you be there? — You bet. (=Certainly)

You can also use it as an answer to THANK YOU.

- Thank you — You bet. (=No problem)

𝗜 𝗯𝗲𝘁 or 𝗜’𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝘁 means ‘I am sure’.

- I bet she will be there. (=I am sure…)
- I bet it will rain soon.
- I’ll bet he will be late.

Both expressions are informal and can be often heard in films and TV shows.

Today we have practised two verbs from previous lessons and learnt two set expressions for informal conversations.
