Black Women?Mental Health?-You are not Weak
I know in passing every day, we ask someone how their day is going. But, do we really want to know? How often do you ask someone, “Hey, how are you?”, and the person responds with “I am fine”. Do you watch their facial expressions, the reactions, body language? Or do you say, “That’s great”, and go on about your day? African American or Black women have a depression rate of almost 50% higher than other women including Caucasians. The negative stereotypes and constant degrading of black women do not help these numbers.
IT CONTINUES TO PERPETUATE THE NEGATIVE INFLUENCE OF BLACK WOMEN AND GIRLS EVERYWHERE.
But, we as a race must put a face to mental illness and depression in order to take care of ourselves. It doesn’t help that we have a stigma of not wanting “anyone in our business”, but at what cost? The cost is the breakdown of our mental well-being enabling us to enjoy what God has given us….LIFE. We have a psychological disadvantage that others do not and it has become a norm for us to be ignored. Become educated and know when you are having a mental breakdown, or becoming depressed before it is too late. Demand to be heard. All black women, and I mean bi-racial, multi-cultural or whatever, have the scares of mental health and it is time to take “YOU” back.
But, to my sisters, I say this….
YOU ARE NOT WEAK…..because you are depressed. This means you need to take a chill pill and focus on you.
YOU ARE NOT WEAK…because you are on medication and decided that just “praying something away” wasn’t going to work. I believe God put things here for us and we must use common sense to know it.
YOU ARE NOT WEAK….because you failed at being Superwoman. Even God rested on the 7th day. Stop allowing society to dictate who you are and how you should get things done. This is your life…you only get one!
YOU ARE NOT WEAK….because society does not recognize your struggles, fears, and sufferings. You are not the problem…the problem are people who are so desensitized that they cannot feel for their fellow human. In their eyes, we will always be angry, vulgar, crazy, loud, boisterous….but we are fighters and survivors.
YOU ARE NOT WEAK….YOU ARE NOT WEAK…..YOU ARE NOT WEAK.
