Meteora is world famous for hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in the world.

This landscape here is also both fascinating and unique. According to Meteoraphototour.com. Meteora was formed of deposits of stone, sand, and mud from streams flowing into a delta at the edge of a lake, during the Paleogene period. The continuous earth movements pushed the seabed upwards, creating a high plateau, causing many vertical fault lines in the thick layer of sandstone.

Today, there are six working monasteries there, all of which you can visit. But not all monasteries are open on all days. So depending on which day you are visiting, you will miss one monastery. Each monastery also charges a small fee to enter. This was 3 euros per monastery at the time of this writing.

Also, not all monasteries are open at the same time of the day.

So please check opening days and times on the date of your visit.

There are many ways to experience Meteora, and most people take a tour bus and visit 2 or 3 of the monasteries while there. But, if you have been reading my other articles…
