COM 320 Chapter 1 — Week 2
This week in COM 320 we started our journey into communication. The things were discussed were organizational structure and the four great challenges to organizational communication. We not only learned through professor Kauweloa’s lectures but through class discussions. The things I found the most interesting in our class were organizational structures, globalization, and terrorism. I found Organizational structure interesting because it defines something that I didn’t really think about. Globalization was interesting for me because I learned how we are all connected in this world. The topic I found most interesting was terrorism due to the fact that it has become more prevalent in recent years.
Organizational structure was defined as a structure that delineates how task allocation, coordination and supervision are focused towards completion of organizational aims (Pugh 1990). Some example of organizational structures are charities, government, and a cooperation. Organizational communication is a must have to accomplish any essential task.
The first great challenge to organizational communication is globalization. Globalization can be summed up as everything is our world is connected, both on personal and organizational level. An issue many scholars ask that has to relate to globalization is how can we satisfy everyone in a timely manner that fits everyone’s schedule?
The next great challenge to organizational communication is terrorism. Terrorism is not just a shared way of thinking but are strategies that create unpredictable violence to people and causes them to question others. Many scholars ask questions like: how can government communication be used to best protect our citizens and national borders?
In conclusion, I found this weeks lesson to be interesting and a great starting point of the semester. Having class discussions with my fellow classmates is a fun way to be engaged in class. I’m looking forward to learning more about communication in following weeks.
