The Astrology of Trauma and Healing
I have a passion for anything related to the cosmos, stars, galaxies, consciousness and the inextricable links to all life process on earth.
First and foremost, I consider myself an Artist.
However, not in the way you might think — as much as I dally with the idea of being able to translate my inner vision into perfectly executed imperfect lines and create an astonishing rendition of a 3d object, alas, I have not mastered that skill.
An artist is someone who creates, someone who takes a vision from the mind and renders it in the physical dimension in some way, shape or form. In this sense, we all, are artists.. as creation is fundamental and integral to the very nature of our beings.
In my 33 years on earth, I have visited some 36 countries, with the over arching desire of seeking freedom. However, although travelling and being profoundly lost, in every sense of the word, became integral to the healing of a traumatic and difficult childhood and adolescence, it became very clear after some time, that the real freedom I was seeking was not in the physical world, but within the dimension of my mind and emotional self. I had experienced deep depression, suicidal thoughts and long periods of stagnancy and despondency, following the deaths of my parents and substantial, physical, emotional and sexual abuse from my father prior to leaving home at 13 years of age.
Traveling was essential in the sense that it gave me the necessary space and distance from ordinary life, to become intimately acquainted with madness, mental breakdowns and breakthroughs — A relentless healing process — and journey.
However, the old adage always stayed with me, in the back of my mind :
“Wherever you go, there you are”
It was when I was 29, while attending a cob building workshop on Waiheke Island, in New Zealand, drinking from with a black mug which had the words:
“Life isn’t about finding yourself, life is about creating yourself.”
I had heard that phrase before, but something dropped for me in that moment, as the words took greater meaning and sunk in.
It was then I decided I was ready to shift from outer freedom seeking, to actively being the creator and the artist of my life. By that point I was also well into my studies of Vedic Astrology with my teacher Komilla Sutton.
I consider Astrology, and specifically Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) one of the most profound methods of truly understanding and healing the mind and emotions.
I hover somewhere in between being quite vocal and very quiet about this aspect of my life. Mostly it is due to the awareness of the general sentiment, especially among those who might dismiss astrology as some strange prehistoric pseudo science based on superstition and animism. However, when one delves deeply, and explores the roots of this ancient and profoundly advanced bank of knowledge, you find that it is far from pseudo science as one might first imagine.
After discovering yoga in my early 20’s, I realised the link between Yogic Sciences including Ayurveda and Astrology. I went through the process of wrapping my head around the (astronomical) fact that the Sun was in fact, located in the constellation of Aries, not Taurus, when I was born. The vedic calendar follows the sidereal calculations based on the fixed position of the stars in the zodiac.
From then on, the interconnectedness of events, and the patterns of life began to make far greater sense, the laws of karma and nature take on far deeper meaning than western astrological techniques could explain.
Vedic Astrology is known as Jyotish. Jyotish is a sanskrit word meaning “The Science of light, coming from the root Jyoti — Light.
It is light that illuminates darkness; Jyotish is said to bring the light of awareness to the darkness of ignorance. This sounds very philosophical, however, when we walk into a dark room, we don’t sit there complaining about the dark! We find the light, and turn it on!
When the mind is illuminated, when it is filled with light, it awakens, the more light penetrates, the greater our awareness grows. An illuminated mind, is an awakened mind. With awareness, comes clarity, with clarity comes effective action and the ability to use our free will in the best possible way, to self reflect, self- realise and be a clear conduit for consciousness to express itself through us, in the material, physical dimension.
It is through thorough and relentless self examination and inquiry, the deep desire to know and understand the nature of my mind, which has helped me to move beyond identification with trauma and move toward healing, not by spiritually bypassing but by accepting the karmic responsibility I carry in this life.
I now offer consultations to assist others in their transformational and healing journey.
