Basic Income: Are You Ready For Freedom?

Basic Income is a thing.

What do Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg all have in common?

Yes, they are all rich AF.

But they also all vouch for Universal Basic Income (or UBI) .

UBI means that the Government would hand you unconditionally a monthly salary sufficient for food, shelter and education for the rest of your life.

Which means, you don’t really have to work for money if you don’t want to.

The perks of this new social contract are many: it could improve health, alleviate poverty, reduce crime, raise education, encourage entrepreneurship and overall improve the quality of our lives.

Experiments are being carried in different cities across Canada, Kenya, Finland, India, Italy, California, The Netherlands.

The results, so far, seem encouraging.

Sounds great, right??

But where is this coming from?

One word: robots.

With massive automation comes massive unemployment.

If a country reaches 30% or 40% unemployment rate, its people will not have enough money to buy stuff, which shatters demand for goods and then everyone else suddenly becomes unemployed as well. The economy simply collapses.

On one hand, you could say UBI would be a desperate attempt of capitalism to survive. On the other hand, you could say it’s the beginning of a new era, where mechanical jobs are done by robots and we’ll go back to do what we were always meant to: being humans.

Let’s see what will happen. But if those three people up there believe UBI it’s the future, then it’s a thing!

The question for me and you is, if we don’t need to work to survive anymore, how do we employ our time? How do we find meaning?

Are we ready for freedom?
