Opportunity is Our Guide

As millennials and college students we are often asked questions like, “What are your plans?” or “What will you do with your degree?” Rarely do we ask each other these questions. Usually, they come from our parents, professors, or other older people who we respect and admire. Perhaps they can ask such questions because they’ve been in our shoes, they’ve already “figured it out”. I thought I had it figured out. Through all of junior high and most of highschool I had convinced myself, family, and friends that I was going to become a lawyer. I figured, I enjoy talking, I like wearing suits, and my favorite tv show is literally a drama about corporate lawyers called, Suits. But the more I excercised my gifts and actual passions, the less I wanted to pursue law. It became very clear to me that Suits is only a tv show and that the cool lawyers depicted in it are mere characters. In reality, 4 years of law school doesn’t sound very appealing and how much excitement could really be in corporate law?
Perhaps the reason we don’t ask each other these questions is because we realize that most of us just don’t know. Although I chose to become a political science major, I have no plans to become a political scientist or a lawyer. I’ve decided to allow my opportunities to lead me to my destiny. We all have a destiny, a place or position in life where we naturally fit and it’s not the small, medium, or large type of fit. This is more of a tailor-made kind of fit. We can and should be certain that our destiny awaits but that does not mean we know how to get there. Our opportunities know the way and we must trust them enough to follow. As long as we remain passionate, gifted, ambitious youth, opportunity will be a frequent visitor at our door.
Interestingly, once we open the door I don’t believe opportunity wants to come in and have coffee or Netflix and chill. Rather, opportunity wants us to get dressed, hop in, and enjoy the ride.
