Beyond the Crowds: Butrint’s Untouched Ancient and Medieval Marvels Revealed
Albania is a peculiar country, where magnificent, picturesque beaches contrast with ubiquitous bunkers and architecture, for which the word “uninteresting” is a rather mild description. However, it should not be forgotten that the tourist qualities of this destination are not limited to the resorts on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. One of the biggest gems in Albania’s tourist crown is Butrint, an ancient city of exceptional historical, cultural and natural values.
Butrint is an ancient settlement located about 20 km from the famous resort of Saranda in Albania. Built on a hill rising on a small peninsula, it is surrounded on three sides by the waters of the lake of the same name. It is an area of exceptional historical value. No wonder, then, that in 1992 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
However, it is worth remembering that the ancient city offers more than just magnificent monuments (the oldest buildings in Butrint were erected even before our era). Due to its location near lakes and marshes, the area is also characterized by exceptional natural beauty and a great diversity of flora and fauna.
