NASA is aware that the threat of a space rock impact like the one 65 million years ago is not very real. Instead, a catastrophic eruption of one of Earth’s supervolcanoes is a much more likely scenario.

Since an increase in activity at Yellowstone National Park seems to be one of the scenarios leading to — at the very least — an international famine, NASA’s preparations for such a circumstance should come as no surprise. It turns out that the American agency already in 2017 developed a plan according to which the volcanic caldera could be cooled. The value of the project is 3.46 billion dollars.

There are about 20 supervolcanoes on Earth, and major eruptions occur on average once every 100,000 years. A prolonged volcanic winter caused by the eruption of such a supervolcano could prevent humanity from producing enough food for its entire population, leading to widespread starvation.
