It is true, though, that he ruled with an iron fist and did not shy away from bloody punishments. He impaled his enemies on stakes, hence his original nickname.

This is not the only bloody aspect of Dracula’s history. As recently discovered by scientists, the prototype of the literary vampire suffered from a disease that caused blood to flow from his eyes. What else do we know about Vlad the Impaler? According to researchers, he was on a meatless diet.

Such conclusions are drawn from the chemical analysis of three letters written in 1457 and 1475 by Vlad. The correspondence was addressed to Thomas Altemberger, the ruler of the city of Sibiu.
