Recent studies have shown that under the Yellowstone caldera, there is much more magma. Scientists say, however, that this does not yet mean that one of the world’s largest volcanoes is about to erupt.

The Yellowstone supervolcano is located in the United States in the state of Wyoming. Today it is just a memory of its strength thousands of years ago. The last powerful eruption occurred about 640,000 years ago, and the last lava flow occurred when North America was not yet inhabited by humans. However, the volcano is still active, and another eruption could actually occur at any time.

A new study by an international team of scientists has found that there is much more liquid magma beneath the Yellowstone caldera than previously suspected. The researchers, led by geologist Ross Maguire of the University of Illinois at Urbana and Champaign (UIUC), wanted to see what percentage of the mass coming from deep within the Earth is in molten form.
