This House would value the work over the worker: an open debate
I should disclose that my background is in communication, so I know a significant amount about the theory that goes behind most modern methods of worker validation. Recently, however, I have started working a job that is very, shall we say bare bones, when it comes to worker validation — leaving workers to judge their own success based on whether or not their work product is valued.
In many cases, people find themselves in this situation; freelance writing among them. Seldom does the writer get specific praise. More often, success is judged by how well the work is received and whether or not it generates more work. In sales, many are left to judge success by sales numbers, though many companies are initiating worker valuation programs. In internships, entry level positions, and right down to flipping burgers, how many hours you get and how much responsibility you are given are often your best markers for success.
Conversely, a good friend of mine feels like I am not valued as a person. Yes, he grants my work product is valued, but feels like to value work product above validating the worker is inhumane to a point. It is a very common trend, and is making many in my field rich from doing seminars and consulting. If an employee is validated, they are happy, and in theory, their work product improves. Egg, meet chicken.
