What Kind of Viewer are You?

Artist: Moira Sweeney
There are two types of Olympic viewers:
The Gold Medal viewers that binge-watch the games from start to finish and cheer on their favorites for each event. They see each dream fulfilled and every broken heart firsthand.
Then there are the Honorable Mentions like me. I don’t watch any of the events, so I miss most of the big moments. I do, however; monitor the results in the news. I usually have a fair idea who took home the Gold and which team caused the biggest ruckus. I know who the Cinderella’s are by name, although I probably couldn’t point them out in a lineup.
I do tend to cheer on, in my own way at least, the occasional favorite like Michael Phelps. If someone were to ask me:

Who is your favorite Olympic athlete?
That would be my answer. A part of that is ignorance, because I do his name and face, but, let’s face it, anyone who manages to compete successfully in five Olympic games has earned my admiration.
So, I’d like to send an artistic shout out to Mr. Phelps — 19 Gold Medals, I wonder what that looks like in a display case?
Now, go out, keep your eye on Rio and enjoy some art.
