An American global security software company ‘ McAfee’ has proved itself to be the largest dedicated security technology company in the world. Founded in 1987, the company creates digital security solutions for PCs, server devices as well as mobile devices. Well, it’s a good thing that this anti-virus system protects the PC from malicious software that tries to install itself even without the knowledge of the user. Thus, there is a need for its temporary shut down. The disabling methods can vary though. This depends on whether you are running stand-alone McAfee virus scanning software or owning the entire McAfee Security Center suite. In this blog, we’ll let you know the methods for temporarily disabling Mcafee Security Center on Windows or Mac PC. Please note that if it is your only antivirus app, turning off McAfee or how to disable McAfee will leave your computer vulnerable to the virus.

how to disable McAfee

On Windows Computer:

  • First, open the Start menu, or click the Windows logo at the bottom left of the screen.
  • Type Mcafee into the Start box next.
  • Click on McAfee ® TotalProtection now. It can be seen at the top of the Start window (with the “Desktop app” subheading below its name).
  • Go to the PC Security tab on the Mcafee window (located at the top-left corner).
  • After that, click on Real-time scanning, i.e. Mcafee window on the left side.
  • Select turn off the option. You can see this at the top right of the page.
  • Click Turn Off, after selecting the time limit.

In case you wish to disable McAfee before you manually turn it ON, go to Never choice within the time limit.

With Real-Time Scanning switched off, exit this window.

  • Click on the Firewall tab in this section. You can find the option below on the left side of a window under the Real-Time Scanning tab.
  • Tap the button Switch Off (i.e. at the top-right side of the page).

If your Firewall page is blank, it means that your McAfee Firewall is now off. You can start off from the next two stages.

  • Click on Turn Off option after choosing time-limit. This will keep Mcafee disabled until the time period is over.
  • Click X at the top right corner to close the Firewall window.
  • Go to Automatic Updates option afterward (you can see the option under Firewall below).
  • Next, you select the option Turn Off.
  • Following this, click Scheduled Scan. The Automatic Updates option is just below.
  • Now, press Option Turn Off.

Now all your services at Mcafee are disabled. If it fails another alternative is to completely uninstall it from your PC.

  • ON MAC COMPUTER: Click first on the Mcafee button. It is white “M” on the red shield icon found on the top-right side of the menu bar on Mac.
  • If this icon can not be seen, press the magnifying glass icon (in the top-right corner). Then type in “McAfee” and then click the Internet Security link.
  • Then press Full Security Console (it is near the drop-down menu at the bottom of Mcafee).
  • Go for Home tab, i.e. on Window’s upper left side, afterward.
  • Tap Gear icon, i.e. in the top right corner of the tab Home.
  • Next, click Real-Time Scanning (close to the drop-down menu at the top). This will open a Real-Time Scanning window.
  • Real-Time Scanning To Disable:

* Click the button on the door.

* Type the administrator password after this and then press OK.

* Then click the Real-Time Scanning button, i.e. in the top right corner.

* After doing so, close Real-Time Scanning window.

  • Click the gear icon again, then click the firewall.
  • First, it is time to disable the Firewall for Mcafee. Do so the same way you disabled Real-Time Scanning.
  • Tap the gear icon again and then on Automatic Updates.
  • Switch off automatic updates now. Do it the same way you disabled both Real-Time Scanning and Firewall.
  • Click the gear icon again, and then press Scan Timeline.
  • Unlock your Complete and Custom Scan Settings account here. Tap on the gear icon and enter a password for your administrator. Hit perfect.
  • Select Weekly drop-down box (i.e. “Scheduled scans” tab on the far-left side).
  • If there isn’t a choice then click on Scheduled scans.
  • Choose choice Never. It’ll save McAfee to scan your PC from reactivating itself.
  • Tap on the gear icon again, then go to McAfee Web Advisor afterward. It is responsible for this inclusion of antivirus in the browsers of your Mac.
  • Tap Toggle in the top-right corner of the Site Advisor page to disable SiteAdvisor. Please include your administrator password after clicking the lock icon.
  • Eventually, the Preferences window closes. The McAfee software on your Mac would be completely disabled with this.
