Qld Premier welcoming the athletes.

The 2021 Qld Premiers Welcome Home Tokyo Olympians Dinner was held at the RNA Brisbane in early September and was the standout event for 2021.

Put together by Limetree Events working with both the Queensland and Australian Olympic Committees, there was much to celebrate — if the state of Queensland competed on its own in Tokyo, our athletes would have finished 7th on the overall medal tally.

Highlights of the evening included the display wall of previous Olympic torches including the original from the Berlin Games in 1936. The wall also featured a collection of original Australian Blazers from previous summer and winter games. Hosted by Brook Hansen and Pat Welsh the evening commenced with the Australian Girls Choir singing, a welcome to country, and then all attending Olympians forming a guard of honour for the Tokyo Athletes to enter through. Entertainment included a live BMX show from Tokyo Gold Medal winner Logan Martin in the courtyard on entry, a stirring poem from Rupert McCall, live crosses to Sydney Gold medallist Nat Cook with the athletes and coaches on the floor during dinner, and a live raffle that raised funds for the athletes.

Tokyo Gold Medalists (Personal Collection).

With all eyes on Brisbane in the lead-up to 2032, and as we open up from Covid restrictions, it was great to be out of the house and working on these types of events again.
