Do you love anyone enough to give them your last avocado maki?

Older (and British) readers may remember the Rolo advertising campaign — “Do you love anyone enough to give them your last Rolo?”

Hold that thought.

My 5-year-old’s favourite food is sushi. He’s a sushi addict. The damage he can do in YO! Sushi, if left to his own devices, is quite extraordinary.

He enjoys different types of sushi that include salmon and prawns, amongst other things, but it is the humble avocado maki roll that is his favourite.

June 18th is International Sushi Day — you knew that, right? — so when this date comes around, it is a good day for him to have his favourite food after school.

On the big day in 2015, I was heading out for my run his sushi was being made — the sushi rice was cooling and the avocado was being chopped.

When I returned, around an hour later, I was greeted at the door by a beaming 5-year-old holding up a solitary avocado maki. “Daddy — this is for you!”

It was his very last one and he had saved it just for me.

Kids — they grab you by the heart when you’re least expecting it.
