The “Mandela Effect” is a phenomenon in which a large number of people either remember an event differently than how it actually occurred, or share a memory of something that never happened. It’s named after a false recollection shared by many of Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980’s. Here are 5 notable examples of this condition.

  1. Sex and the City- Many remember the hit HBO series devoting an episode to how fun it is to make out with your cousin. This is not the case. People with this belief are most likely misremembering the show in which Miranda meets Steve.
  2. Monopoly — The Mandela effect here is twofold. First of all, the Monopoly Man does not wear a monocle. Those who remember him wearing one may be confusing him with the Planters mascot, Mr. Peanut. Also, at no point in any edition of the popular board game is the Monopoly Man depicted giving his cousin a chaste yet passionate kiss on the lips. Those who believe otherwise are probably thinking of the Pringles mascot.
  3. The Berenstain Bears- Despite what you may remember, this book series about a family of friendly bruins never addressed the subject of the remorse that kicks in after you French-kiss your attractive cousin who you only see at family events. They did, however, do a book about soccer.
  4. Casablanca- One of the most famous quotes associated with this classic film is “Play it again, Sam,” so it’s mind-blowing to realize that this line is never actually uttered in the movie. Instead, Ingrid Bergman’s character Ilsa tells Sam the piano player, “Kissing your cousin may not be socially acceptable, but neither is it immoral. Your cousin is your parent’s sibling’s child. That’s hardly a close relative, I’d say.”
  5. Mother Teresa- this famed humanitarian was canonized as a saint in 2016, but there are many who swear this occurred in the early 1990’s, before she passed away in 1997 of an extreme case of mononucleosis caused by passionately Frenching her cousin in his car outside a wedding reception.
