Why I Left the Right: How Studying Religion Made Me a Liberal
Susie Meister

Susie, thank you for your story. I had a similar journey out of fundamentalist Christianity. It’s amazing what education can do when one is willing to challenge her own beliefs. Conservatives decry higher ed because they think it turns people liberal. Indeed, it does, and that’s what it’s supposed to do, to make one more thoughtful, more understanding, more tolerant, more generous, more wise, more patient, less fearful, prejudiced, superstitious, parochial, and xenophobic. I am no longer a believing Christian, but I still follow as best I can the teachings of Jesus. The Pope was right when he called out Trump. Bernie is more Christian than Ted Cruz. The fundamentalists made the gravest error when they politicized their religion; they ruined our politics, doomed their faith, and became pawns of the demagogues like Reagan, Atwater, Rove, and now Cruz.
