Re: Alan’s comment: Adding the word application as in “mobile application UIs” in the first paragraph would help clear the confusion. There are quite a few articles out about menu UIs for mobile web sites. Alternative hover and priority plus are two examples you can search for.

Nick, I’d like to see your take on mobile web site menus as well.
