Yes, there is a definite Christian ascetic influence. Not that Christianity is the only source of this puritansim, but it is prevalent in Eurocentric societies (including N. America). For the ~99% of human existence in small, tribal societies, drug use was ritual behavior, not just condoned but expected in initiations and other religious practices. People have done this for tens of thousands of years as a compensating mechanism for their newly evolved consciousness, which causes as much downside and consternation as benefit. Humans have many ways in which they quiet or suppress consciousness, and drug use is one of them.
