Wow. I actually created a Medium account JUST so I could comment and say that you’ve so eloquently hit the nail on the head here. I never really considered myself a big horror fan until I started watching films like It Follows, The Babadook, and The Witch. I saw the latter in theaters on Saturday, and have heard my fair share of “that was boring” and “nothing really happened.” While I’m frustrated by the number of loud-mouthed philistines asserting what horror should be and undermining the brilliance of the film, I like to think that demand for thoughtful genre films is on the rise and that we’ll be seeing more and more come to the screen.
