Hello all! We’re so excited DataFamCon is back to celebrate the birthday of Star Trek! As you may or may not know, on September 8, 1966, Star Trek was beamed into households for the first time and has captured hearts and minds since.

We have two awesome partnerships for this month. First, Jennifer Dawes is going to be co-hosting with us! We’re super excited and cannot wait for everything that you all will create this month!

Second, we’re partnering with Tableau’s #DataPlusTV for the data! The data can be found on Tableau’s website here. There is so much amazing data here, be prepared to be overwhelmed and excited! When I was working with this data, what I found helpful was to use the full data set to explore the data, but then create a crosstab of the data that you need and export that from Tableau to actually build the viz. That will greatly improve performance and keep you from hitting the Tableau Public max storage. If you’re using Tableau Public to build the visual, you can export a CSV or Excel of the crosstab after you publish it up.

David Kelly also pulled together this fantastic, shorter version of the Data Plus TV data that only includes Star Trek; feel free to use this one if you want to skip the full IMDb dataset!

Some notes on the data:

  1. The Killing Game and the Killing Game Part II only have release year, not full release date in the data. They were released 3/4/1998
  2. Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 data is missing Episode 1 as these data were pulled prior to its release in July.

Below are some amazing examples to help spark your creativity. We’ll be running this the month of September, so go boldly where no person has [vizzed] before!
