One does not simply learn to code

I tell people that anyone can learn to code, it takes dedication, work, and time.

Like any other legit skill you “simply” need about 10,000 hours to begin mastery. Most of us (self taught programmers) kicked off learning in 6 months of full time study. I prefer books, the paper kind.

As someone with more than 20,000 hours (conservatively) in the trade, more than a decade of professional experience, and a dedication to the craft that exceeds any comp-sci or PHD grad in the field, I am finally over the hump.

It feels good. My work spans 20 languages from C++ and compiling Linux kernels through each layer of that stack, and begrudgingly spitting out Javasvript once and a while. Now that I “get it” and operate out of habit and it is much more clear that I have so much more to learn.

S if being humbled by knowledge, a requirement to learn more everyday, and a need to write copious documentation each day seems fair, I say jump in.
