Could it not be argued that the sample size we’re drawing from here is just too narrow?
The examples of porn moving from public in the 1970s to private today has happened over a 40 year period, a far smaller period than the period responsible for our inheritance of Christian shame around sex (hundreds of years).
Couldn’t we assume that as once-”deviant” desires are normalised (and religion increasingly lost), shame around these desires recedes? Perhaps the retreat into private spaces is a necessary intermediary (but temporary) step.
