Very nice breakdown of the pathways for defining and pursuing PM career — or at least beginning the exploration thereof. I’ll add that my foray into product included going to Meetups in Chicago to meet seasoned and novice PMs, ask them about their pathways and best books and experiential education they’d advise I look into. I targeted weekend-long to single term (8–12 week) courses such as those taught at General Assembly and Startup Institute out of 1871. I eventually identified I’d prefer selling a product, with the emphasis of human interactivity on the customer/client PLUS productive interfacing to inform how we hone the product with my company’s PM and dev team. My discovery was therefore cost-effective, network-building and fit-based. No big financial or career risks, just some good healthy dialogue and education, both about PMing and myself.
