Medium: the highs and lows of clapping
Amy Torres

I think the whole 0–50 clapping metric is borked.

Almost anything would be better:

  • 1–5 stars
  • -2 , -1, 0, +1, +2
  • 0–100% (why 50!?)
  • like, hate, funny, indifferent, agree
  • metrics on scrolling (did the user skim read, did the user finish?)
  • did the user share
  • amount of text highlighted

Also, it’s pretty damn arrogant of Medium to think we’ll sit there for 10 seconds holding down a button to give claps; if I’ve read it, that is my time investment, allow me to express my satisfaction with easier tools, or elaborate with a comment.

Claps just make it wooly. I don’t like wooly.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
