I think the whole 0–50 clapping metric is borked.
Almost anything would be better:
- 1–5 stars
- -2 , -1, 0, +1, +2
- 0–100% (why 50!?)
- like, hate, funny, indifferent, agree
- metrics on scrolling (did the user skim read, did the user finish?)
- did the user share
- amount of text highlighted
Also, it’s pretty damn arrogant of Medium to think we’ll sit there for 10 seconds holding down a button to give claps; if I’ve read it, that is my time investment, allow me to express my satisfaction with easier tools, or elaborate with a comment.
Claps just make it wooly. I don’t like wooly.
