HOW TO ADD A DATA DISK TO A VIRTUAL MACHINE IN AZURE
This article will highlight data disk performance and how it can be added to Azure Virual Machine and Azure Disk. It will also explain how it can be diagnose for your disk IO and the changes you can make to optimize for performance and initialize it
Note: It is a best practice to use one or more specific disks to store a VM ‘s data. When you create an Azure Virtual Machine. It has an Operating System disk and a temporary disk. It is advisable to use the temporary disk to store data. This is because as the name implies, it offers no redundancy or backup because it doesn’t reside in Azure Storage
STEP 1
a. Create your window 11 VM
b. On the left side-bar of your dashboard click on “Disk”
c. Scroll down and click on create and attach a new disk
d. Name your new disk and allow the other information as default
e. Click on save icon below
f. You will notice that the (Operating System) OS disk and data disk are two different disks
Connect to your Virtual Machine and download the RDP file once you have downloaded, follow the prompt, insert your username follow and password
Next, since you now have remote access to your windows desktop, right click on the windows icon and click on “Disk Management”
Right click on the Disk 2 below and GPT (GUID Patton Table)
From the drop-down click on “new simple volume”
Next, click on the “new simple volume wizard”
Also, click “Next” on the Formal Partition
To close the wizard click “Finish”
Highlight red in the new volume, you will notice that your new volume has been initialized
Next, click on your new data disk highlighted with a red arrow
As shown below, your new data disk is ready for use
