Accelerate

Breakneck speed

You drive at breakneck speed down the winding road. Terrified, I try to turn on the radio. You tell me keep it off, we have to talk. I timidly ask you to slow down.

You smile. No, you say. You accelerate yet further. I’m pleading now; I say we’ll die if you don’t slow down.

I know what you did, you say. You don’t deserve to live.

What about you? I ask. If we crash at this speed you won’t survive either.

Another slow, wry smile. After what you did, I’ve got nothing left to live for, you reply quietly.

Up ahead I see a busy junction, its traffic lights turning to red. You accelerate.
