My guess is that can possibly do public transport without grids since non-grid European cities tend to have relatively good public transport compared to grid based counterparts in US (ie is as much about policy as possibility) and that in future self drive may blur the distinction between public transport like rail and private like cars, with individual carriages/pods/vehicles for both.
