Identifying Gold Plated Silver Jewelry

If you find a piece of jewelry that is gold in color, but is marked “925”, you have what is called “Vermeil” (pronounced “vir-mul”). It is gold plated sterling silver, and it is often well made. It is not uncommon to find such jewelry with semi-precious stones in it.

Most vermeil jewelry is quite attractive, and unless it is damaged, you may be better off keeping it, giving it to someone special, or selling it as jewelry.

Vermeil only has scrap value for its silver content.
