when I get jumbled, tautologic, long-winded, tedious, or otherwise less-than-coherent material from my writers, I simply print out the offending copy, hand it to them and ask them to please read it aloud in front of me.
I think a lot of the craziness stems from parents who grew up in that 1980’s “latchkey kid” environment. They saw (or experienced) what happens when children have to navigate through day-to-day life with zero or minimal protection. Because of this, they are now massively over-correcting in the way that they approach parenting.
