Tesla’s frequent OTA (Over The Air) software updates might help illustrate the trouble legacy automakers are in. Why don’t the incumbents update software in their cars the way Tesla does? Because their systems are cobbled together, without a central control point, because it’s what they’ve always done in a culture that lacks the right taste buds.
This. The automakers are like the cell phone makers. They figure it’s so difficult for them that it will impossibly difficult for any upstarts. Now Tesla isn’t Apple, and indications are that the automakers are aware of the danger they face. Plus several thousand pounds of materials per product is a really large barrier for anyone to breach.
But. Tesla isn’t dead yet. And they have proven that you can build something in that ecological niche.
