“Got up at 4:00 am. Ate breakfast at the Army base. I had a cheese omelette, bacon, hash browns, French toast, Cocoa Krispies, an orange, milk, and orange juice. Ate “lunch” on the bus. We had pretzels, super nuts, jelly beans, hard candy, and watered down juice. Fell to sleep for the first time solidly on the bus. Had roast pork in barbecue sauce, mashed potatoes, com, salad, cake, and really soft, soft ice cream for dinner.”

I didn’t take any photos since this was primarily a travel day. Here’s a pic of Clint Eastwood in The Outlaw Josie Wales.

“Went to the movie at Fort Riley, KS. Everyone avoided “Herman.” The movie was The Outlaw Josie Wales. In the coming attractions we saw Howdy Doody in the movie Crazy Mary. All our Boy Scouts went wild. Clint Eastwood was in the feature. He spit tobacco juice on a dog, scorpion, beetle, and dead men. It was a pretty good movie. During the movie Herman was acting up and we avoided him. We slept in a hot barracks and went to bed about 11:00 pm. Had a tough time falling asleep due to the heat.”

2017 Commentary

>”Fell to sleep for the first time solidly on the bus.”

As a kid, I never fell asleep easily. My parents told horror stories from when I was a baby. The first time I remember falling asleep easily without my inner dialog questioning life, the universe, and everything was a year later: June 26, 1978 — my first night at USAFA.

I had to have been exhausted at this stage of the trip to sleep solidly on the bus. So, it looks like the three weeks on the road/trail had finally drained me. That exhaustion is going to manifest itself a few days later.

Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?
