July 5, 1977, Tue — St. Louis Budweiser Plant
“Woke up at 6:00 am with a stiff neck. Ate breakfast at McDonald’s and we had scrambled eggs and sausage. Ed finally at a little of his breakfast. Visited the Budweiser Plant in St. Louis. Ed took a picture when he wasn’t supposed to. Had two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at a truck stop. Crossed the Missouri-Kansas border about 2:30 pm. Finished reading Star Wars which is a pretty good book. Ate dinner at Pizza Hut from 8:30–10:00 pm. Played volleyball after a shower. Slept in the girls lockers in the gym.”
Star Wars had opened May 25, 1977 without much of a marketing budget. I had seen a Gene Shalit review on TV in June that made me want to see the movie but decided to read the book first. Back then summer time movies stayed in the theaters for months rather than weeks. The book wasn’t Dune or Childhood’s End but it was a “pretty good book.” Reading the book first did not spoil the movie.
I have a vague recollection that we lodged in the gym at Fort Riley but I’m not certain. We all had camping gear for sleeping on the ground so I guess sleeping in the girls locker room wasn’t a big deal.
