Offering a slightly different perspective...
Our 1.0 got featured in the UK App Store (position 9 Best New App) and resulted in our first 1000 users. 46% were one time wonders, but 15% have become daily users.
Since then, we haven’t had to worry about growth because we’ve had enough regular users and viral / organic growth to experiment on changing our product without doing anything or worrying about it.
On top of that, we now have a nice data on which demographic resonated and which didn’t. There were surprises and some users we’d never thought to go after end up being great segments.
The point I’d make is that the App Store isn’t a panacea and isn’t good for long term growth, but it’s a great kick start.
