Can diversity be more than simply going skin deep?

Can diversity be about diverse educational backgrounds?

Diverse life experiences?

Perhaps diverse economic backgrounds, political affiliations, geographic locations, religions, and frames of mind.

Or is diversity only about binaries: Male vs. Female, or race: Black, White, Yellow?
